HOMECOMING 2010

The 2010 Uvalde High School Homecoming celebration is going to be early this year, the second weekend in September.  The homecoming parade through downtown Uvalde will be late Thursday afternoon the 9th and then the big game against the Pearsall Mavericks will be 7:30 PM on Friday the 10th.

While it is not an official UHS Alumni reunion, homecoming is always a fun time to be in Uvalde visiting friends.  This year, it is so early the leaves will still be on the trees.  We all need to be there to cheer the Coyotes on to victory!

STATE OF THE ASSOCIATION

This year has been one of renewal for the Uvalde High School Alumni Association. The UHSAA Board of Directors renewed its dedication to make our association more visible and provide more opportunities for you to become involved.

We continue to receive membership renewals and new life memberships. This shows continued interest, and we hope to see this support increase so that we are  better positioned to help our UHS students

The By-laws have been revised and a copy mailed to each member for review.  Members will vote on the by-laws at the September meeting.

Very important is the addition of a new website that will help UHS alumni keep in touch with one another.  We’re confident that the improved navigation and addition of individual class pages will help achieve that goal.

We are committed to the support of Uvalde CISD schools and U.H.S.graduates.
We hope to see you at the UHSAA Annual Meeting, Saturday, September 11, 2010.

Lawrence Ray Smith, President

Pennies Saved = Dollars to Give

There is a way you can provide money to the alumni association without costing you a cent:  just be sure we always have your current email address.  If the newsletter you are reading right now was delivered by the Post Office, it is because we do not have your email address, or, we may have had your address, but your email server refused to accept mail from uhsmaillist@yahoo.com .

Our mailing list has about 4,600 names on it, and of those, we have about 1050 e-mail addresses.  Our guess is that of the remaining 3550 people on the list, at least 50% or about 1775 of them have email.  Please, those of you who do have e-mail send your address along with your full name and year graduated to uhsmaillist@yahoo.com and don’t forget to put us in your address book so your server will accept messages from the Alumni Association.

This is very important; we have to pay postage to mail to the 3550 while the 1050 can be communicated with for free.  The money saved could help provide another scholarship or two.

Calling All Classes

The UHS Alumni Association has been in operation for about seven years now, and, in that period of time, we have had two whole-school reunions and many individual class reunions.  Every year several classes organize reunions and those working on getting them together soon realize what a job it is to find all their classmates who have moved away from Uvalde and they have lost touch with.

The Alumni Association has the wherewithal to be of immense help in organizing reunions in that we can gather and keep updated names and addresses of UHS exes that can be provided to the organizers when needed.  We have very complete lists for some classes but, unfortunately, many of our class lists are pretty skimpy.  In addition, people move or change their email addresses and forget to notify us.

In order to rectify this problem the UHSAA Membership/Mail List Committee is setting up a Class Contact program with at least one member from each class to be a volunteer liaison between their individual class and the Association.  This is not intended to be a full time job, and we would expect the “Class Contact” to use other members of the class to help gather the information.  If you think you might like to serve as the Class Contact for your class, please respond to the Alumni Association at uhsmaillist@yahoo.com .  Around the end of August or early in September we will contact those who have volunteered to get the program up and going.  Since we will be exchanging information, the Class Contacts should have email and it would be advantageous to have Microsoft Excel also.

We would like to make one thing very clear:  while we are accumulating names and addresses and building mailing lists, we do not share this information with outside organizations.  We have a system in place to share classmate info with other classmates that endeavors to protect the privacy of others.

We look forward to working with you this fall in building a larger and stronger alumni network.
